On May 14, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced the appointment of Franz Baumann of Germany as Assistant Secretary-General, Department for General Assembly and Conference Management. Mr. Baumann Mr. Baumann holds degrees in public administration from the University of Konstanz and a Ph.D. in political science from Carleton University.

Congratulations to Computer Science Professor Nicola Santoro who is this year's recipient of the Prize for Innovation In Distributed Computing. The Prize for Innovation In Distributed Computing is awarded by the Colloquium on Structural Information and Communication Complexity. It is established to recognize individuals whose research contributions on the relationships between information and efficiency in decentralized computing have expanded the collective investigative horizon by formulating new problems, or identifying new research areas, that were at the time of their introduction unorthodox and outside the mainstream. The prize recognizes originality, innovation and creativity. The prize was awarded at the 16th edition of the SIROCCO, May 25 to 27, in Piran, Slovenia.

Carleton geography graduate, Chris Czerwinski, has been chosen as the Carleton University recipient of the Canadian Association of Geographers Award. This award is given annually to the student with the highest standing in Geography for that year. As the recipient of this award, he receives a complimentary, 12-month membership in the CAG for 2010 and his name is published in the CAG Newsletter and on the CAG webpage.
